As a result of excessive coal combustion, the children of Mongolia are falling ill to a variety of respiratory diseases, one being pneumonia. Not only does industry produce coal pollution but parents do as well, for indoor heating is often provided by coal stoves. One particular concern attributed to this energy source is the carbon monoxide which is released as a byproduct along with particulate matter that may cause respiratory irritation. Particularly dangerous in developing countries, since the usage of fossil fuels for indoor heating and cooking is often far too expensive, is carbon monoxide poisoning. Air pollution is a global issue, raising health concerns for nearly 7 million people each year, but it is particularity bad in Mongolia where the concentrations of particulates (specifically PM2.5) in the air once reached 133 times the limit established by the World Health Organization.
